Remote but accessible: Powering far-flung mining operations goes green
The mining industry has historically been seen at odds with the energy transition, with HSBC noting in their 2025 Net Zero Transition Plan that the sector accounts for an estimated 4-7% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, both directly from operations and indirectly from power generation.
Yet, mining operations located in remote areas present novel and unique opportunities for the mining industry and miners to decarbonise their operations, relying on new technologies and forms of financing.
While remote sites come with a number of challenges, such as limited access to energy and transportation infrastructure, individual mine operators, conglomerates and governments are taking steps to turn remote mining operations ‘green’.
