Obituary: Daniel Mallo

It is with immense regret that IJGlobal announces the passing of Daniel Mallo, one of the best-known bankers in energy and infrastructure.

Daniel, aged 53, died in a tragic boating accident on 7 October. Hong Kong marine police pulled Daniel and a 57-year old friend from the sea after their catamaran capsized near Beaufort Island, while the Hong Kong Observatory's strong monsoon signal was in place. Daniel later died at hospital.

News of Daniel’s passing (pictured right) was also aired on LinkedIn in a touching letter by his wife Eva Lind-Mallo.

“Daniel packed more living into his all too short time with us than most do in several lifetimes,” said Eva. “We should celebrate the things he did whilst grieving what we can no longer do together.”

Daniel, as Société Générale managing director and head of energy, infrastructure and metals & mining for Asia Pacific, was a well-respected and thoughtful leader.

“Tragic news. Daniel was a wonderful man who we greatly respected and an example to all of us in the global energy and infrastructure market,” Nicholas Wong of Clifford Chance shared on LinkedIn.

Added SocGen colleague Mukta Arya: “Daniel was a thorough professional and a right combination of results-oriented and people focussed leader.”

Before moving to Hong Kong in 2014, Daniel was head of SocGen’s energy finance and advisory team for the Americas.

“I worked with Daniel back in the early 2000s in New York in a few LATAM projects,” reminisced Fernando Ferreyra of SOURCE Global. “He was always very nice and thorough. I left banking in 2006 but always kept in touch with Daniel; he was that kind of person who was always open and available for a quick catch up. A true gentleman and great person.”

Daniel is survived by his wife Eva, son Theodore, brother Dominique, and mother Irene. His father Jean-Jacques is deceased.

The family has established an inmemori webpage to honour Daniel. Intrafaith church services will be held Friday, 29 October. Further details about the service, which will be live-streamed for those unable to be present, the cremation and the wake are available at https://www.inmemori.com/dmallo-u31ah.

Eva writes that if you wish to pay further respects to Daniel, 2 options have been created which will be a lasting tribute and legacy far more meaningful than flowers as they plant seeds for the future. Details and links are also on the inmemori page for Daniel.

“I’m very sad to hear of his passing,” Brad Kim of Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners confided on LinkedIn.

Friend and colleague Luca Tonello of SMBC added: “Nothing has brought us together over the last few days as hearing about this loss. … We will miss Daniel deeply and his being sharp and direct just kept us all on our toes. Rest in peace, my friend.”
