Renewables Outlook 2013

Despite overtaking power as the principle generation source for the first time, 2012 was a hard year for renewables, with both project value and volume sharply declining on 2011 figures. The continuing economic crisis has put renewable subsidies under threat across Europe and low bank liquidity has made procurement of long term debt difficult. The sector has some cause for hope however as the reach of renewables continues to grow with new countries bringing procurement schemes online and successfully closing projects. As the traditionally strong European and North American markets contract it seems that it is the emerging markets that could provide the greatest opportunities for renewable generation in the immediate future.
