Uzbekistan releases gas-fired expansion plans

The Ministry of Energy plans to expand 3 gas-fired power plants by more than 2GW.

The ministry said that the project expansion will occur at existing gas-fired power plants in the regions of Navoi, Qashqadaryo and in Uzbekistan's capital.

The expansion plans, totalling 2,264MW of new installed capacity, include the implementation of these large investment projects:

  • 2x 450MW combined-cycle (CCGT) units at Talimarjan power plant
  • 2x 650MW CCGT units at Navoi power plant
  • 2x 32MW gas-turbine units at Tashkent power plant

The ministry has released the following tentative commissioning schedule for the new facilities:

  • Talimarjan power plant expansion, COD 2024
  • Navoi power plant expansion, COD 2024-2025
  • Tashkent power plant expansion, COD 2023

The new assets annually will save 2.4 billion m3 of natural gas and generate 14 billion kWh of electricity. Additionally, the ministry shared that the expansion project will create 700 new jobs.

Earlier this month, Uzbekistan's ministry announced that a 270MW gas-fired power plant in south-central Uzbekistan connected to the grid.
